Dr. Murphy serves as a primary care physician at the W.G. (Bill) Hefner Veterans Medical Center, Salisbury, North Carolina. Prior to that, he served as the director of medical education at the Bluefield (West Virginia) Regional Medical Center (BRMC). An AOA board-certified family physician, he also serves as a clinical professor of primary care for the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine – Virginia Campus (VCOM-Virginia) in Blacksburg.
Following a distinguished 30-year career in the U.S. Navy, from which he retired as a captain in the Navy’s medical corps in 1999, Dr. Murphy accepted the position of dean of the Des Moines (Iowa) University— College of Osteopathic Medicine. He then served as a professor of family medicine, an associate dean for postgraduate training and an associate dean for clinical sciences at what is now the University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine. After that, he became the vice president and founding dean for the William Carey University-College of Osteopathic Medicine in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, before going to VCOM.
The American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians awarded him a fellowship in 2000 and a distinguished fellowship in 2006. Additionally, the Association of Osteopathic Directors and Medical Educators awarded him a fellowship in 2006.
A member of the AOA since 1969, Dr. Murphy served on the AOA’s Board of Trustees from 1991 until 1999 and returned to service as an AOA Trustee in 2006. Throughout his career he also served as a military representative in the AOA’s House of Delegates and chaired various AOA departments, bureaus, committees and task forces. He is also the AOA’s liaison to the national Joining Forces Initiative. Currently, Dr. Murphy serves on the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners.
Aside from his involvement at the national level, Dr. Murphy has been an active member of state and local osteopathic medical organizations. He served as delegate and president of both the Kentucky Osteopathic Medical Association and the Association of Military Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (AMOPS). He also is a charter member/founder of AMOPS.
After earning his osteopathic medical degree in 1973 from what is now the A.T. Still University-Kirksville (Mo.) College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Murphy completed his postdoctoral training in family practice at Naval Hospital Camp in Pendleton, California.
