John J. Kalata, DO, MS (MEd), FACOFP

John J. Kalata, DO, MS (MEd), FACOFP, serves as program director for both the Family Medicine and Transitional Year Residency Programs at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) in Erie, Pennsylvania. He also holds the role of assistant designated institutional official and has been a clinical professor of family medicine at LECOM since 1992. Dr. Kalata is chair of the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association (POMA) Foundation and practices family medicine with Medical Associates of Erie.

A dedicated leader in osteopathic medicine, Dr. Kalata has held numerous leadership positions at the state and national levels. He is the Second Vice President of the AOA Board of Trustees (2025 – present) and immediate past president of the POMA, following terms as president (2023-24), president-elect and vice president. He has served on the POMA Board of Trustees since 2014 and has represented Pennsylvania as a delegate to the AOA and American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP) Houses of Delegates. He also served as director of medical education at both Millcreek Community Hospital and Metro Health Center and was chief of staff at Millcreek Community Hospital from 2009 to 2012.

Dr. Kalata is a recipient of several professional honors, including the Frederick J. Solomon, DO, Award of Merit and multiple teaching awards. He has presented at numerous state and national conferences on topics in family medicine, medical education and healthcare policy.

He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) and a Master of Science in Medical Education from LECOM. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Pre-Professional Studies from the University of Notre Dame.
