David E. Garza, DO

David E. Garza, DO, is an osteopathic family physician, medical educator and healthcare leader. He is an assistant professor and Chair of Primary Care at the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) in San Antonio, where he also serves as founding Chair of the CME Committee and leads the development of the school’s continuing medical education program (CME). He also currently serves as Chair of the AOA Department of Membership.
A native of Laredo, Texas, Dr. Garza practiced as a solo family physician in his hometown for 25 years before transitioning to academic medicine. He subsequently played a central role in developing undergraduate and graduate medical education in Laredo, including serving as founding program director of UIWSOM’s family medicine residency program, assisting in the development of its internal medicine residency program and designing and directing a longitudinal third-year medical student clerkship program.
Dr. Garza’s professional service has included seven years as a member of the Texas Medical Board. He is a past president of the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association, TMF Health Quality Institute, the Texas Society of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians and the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine Alumni Association. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians and is board-certified by both the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians and the American Board of Family Medicine.
He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from the University of North Texas Health Science Center/Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNTHSC/TCOM) and a Master of Medical Education Leadership from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM). His professional interests center on medical education, physician leadership, mentorship, strengthening primary care and stewardship of the osteopathic profession for future generations.
