David E. Garza, DO, is AOA board-certified in family medicine and holds a designation of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). He is the director of Family Medicine and Rural/Underserved Clerkships and the director of Osteopathic Recognition for residency programs at the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) in San Antonio, where he is the associate dean of clinical affairs. He also serves as the medical director for the University of the Incarnate Word Health Services.

Dr. Garza initially practiced as a solo family physician in his hometown of Laredo, Texas, for 25 years before transitioning to an academic role. He played a pivotal role in establishing the first Graduate Medical Education (GME) and Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) programs in Laredo. As the founding program director for UIWSOM’s family medicine residency program, he contributed to the creation and staffing of their Internal Medicine residency program. He also designed and directed a 12-month core clerkship program for third-year UIWSOM students.

His extensive professional involvement includes seven years of service as a member of the Texas Medical Board, certification by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians and recognition as a Distinguished Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP). Dr. Garza has held leadership positions in several prominent medical associations, including past presidencies of the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association, Texas Society of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, TMF Health Quality Institute and the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM) Alumni Association.

He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from University of North Texas Health Science Center/Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, and a Master of Medical Education Leadership from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine.
