Nearly 841,000 individuals died of drug overdoses between 1999 and 2019 in the United States (US), with 70% of those deaths attributed to opioids [1]. Misconceptions about persons who use injection drugs and tablets have created barriers to seek ways to minimize associated risks. The creation of supervised injection sites (SIS)—where individuals may use these drugs under medical supervision [2]—may be a critical component in combating the opioid epidemic.
