Bridging the Gap in Pediatric Mental Healthcare

This course provides pediatric-serving providers advanced mental health education beneficial to primary care and emergency care settings. NEAR Science, providing a holistic understanding of how trauma and resilience impact health outcomes, will be the foundation of this course. Through a NEAR science lens, evidence-based practices will be specifically explored for treating postpartum depression, childhood behavioral health challenges and adolescent substance (including proper prescribing). This course also educates participants on consultative care through a pediatric mental health care access program (OKCAPMAP).

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:
  • Critically evaluate methods of clinical practice, integrate evidence-based practice and implement a trauma-informed approach to improve pediatric patient care
  • Review research and practice tools to effectively treat patients through a trauma-informed approach and understand how trauma is linked to behavioral concerns within pediatric patient care
  • Effectively build rapport with the pediatric patient and/or family member experiencing substance use/misuse while maintaining a professional and psychologically safe space
