Supporting chronic disease prevention: AOA joins coalition backing S. 3224

The AOA joined the Smarter Health Care Coalition and other stakeholders in urging the Senate to pass the Chronic Disease Flexible Coverage Act (S. 3224). This bipartisan bill allows health plans and employers to provide preventive care for chronic diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease, before patients meet their deductibles. Already approved by the House, this legislation could significantly enhance access to essential medications and services.

Research shows that removing cost-sharing improves medication adherence and reduces health disparities, benefiting over 61 million Americans. Chronic diseases account for 90% of U.S. health care costs, highlighting the need for effective prevention strategies. The legislation builds on existing IRS guidance to expand pre-deductible coverage, enabling better health outcomes without increasing premiums or federal spending.
