Advocacy in action: Protecting physicians & patient care in Michigan

By AOA Staff

01.03.25

The AOA and the Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) successfully partnered on an advocacy campaign to oppose harmful legislation in the Michigan State Legislature. The proposed bills, HB 6085, HB 6086, SB 1158 and SB 1159, would have significantly increased malpractice insurance premiums and encouraged defensive medicine by raising caps on noneconomic damages to as high as $3 million and adding loss of household services to recoverable damages. These changes threatened to destabilize Michigan’s health care system and hinder patient access to care.

Thanks to strong collaboration and grassroots advocacy, we were able to protect physicians and patients from these detrimental measures. Nearly 500 letters, social media posts, and phone calls were made to Michigan lawmakers on this issue. This victory demonstrates the power of advocacy and the importance of your involvement. Thank you to the MOA and our advocates for their partnership and engagement.
