Earlier this week, AOA leaders and DOs from multiple specialties participated in a series of high-level meetings and events in Washington, D.C., to advance the priorities of the osteopathic profession. As a non-partisan physician membership organization, the AOA is committed to advocating for healthcare policies that support the delivery of high-quality care, respect scientific integrity, and protect public health. In furtherance of this goal, we engage with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle and continually seek opportunities to inform the policy development process at the ground level.

Our advocacy efforts this week began by meeting with newly elected physician members of Congress to discuss key healthcare policies impacting DOs and their patients.

Shortly after, AOA leaders engaged in critical discussions with top policymakers, including a roundtable hosted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and a meeting with Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA-05). These meetings provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen relationships with the new Administration and Congress, while ensuring that DOs and osteopathic medical students have a seat at the table. AOA leaders discussed the urgent need for policy reforms affecting our members and their patients, including:

  • Reducing prior authorization delays and administrative burdens
  • Addressing stagnant physician payment rates
  • Improving patient access to care
  • Advancing whole-person, preventive medicine

The AOA’s advocacy continued on Capitol Hill with a congressional briefing designed to educate lawmakers and their staff on the unique role of osteopathic medicine. The briefing showcased how DOs improve patient care nationwide, with a focus on preventive care, service in rural and underserved areas and leadership in the armed forces.

Following the briefing, AOA leaders convened a Bureau on Federal Health Programs (BFHP) meeting, where subject matter experts discussed key healthcare policies being considered in Congress and the administration. The discussion focused on how AOA can contribute meaningful bipartisan recommendations that support both physicians and patients.
