Congress fails to pass a critical long-term funding bill

By AOA Staff

12.20.24

Despite initial bipartisan support, Congress failed to pass a Continuing Resolution (CR) that included several of the AOA’s key legislative priorities. The proposed package would have extended the Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education (THCGME) program, preserved telehealth flexibilities, reauthorized the Substance Use Disorder Treatment and Recovery Loan Repayment Program (STAR-LRP), mitigated cuts to Medicare physician payments and much more.

The CR was derailed at the last minute, leaving the future of these vital programs uncertain. This setback threatens access to care in underserved communities and the stability of physician practices. The failure to pass this resolution raises questions about how Congress will fund the government in the long term. However, the AOA and its affiliates remains committed in advocating for our members and their patients. Earlier this month, the AOA and 41 other osteopathic affiliates urged Congressional leadership to address key priorities before the end of the year. We will continue to push for policies that ensure the sustainability of physician practices, expand access to care and support the osteopathic profession.

Your voice matters—stay engaged as we work together to ensure Congress addresses these critical issues and fulfills its responsibility to protect healthcare providers and the patients they serve.
