Looking Forward

Fall 2024 BEL Workgroup introduction & welcome

A greeting from Shawn M. Hamm, DO, MPH, the BEL’s New Physician in Practice Member

As we welcome a new year with AOA President Teresa A. Hubka, DO, FACOOG (Dist.), FACOG, CS, leading the way, your Bureau of Emerging Leaders (BEL) is already hard at work representing all osteopathic medical students, residents, fellows and new physicians in practice throughout the country. We are your voice to the AOA Board of Trustees, and our goal is to communicate and advocate for the needs of our constituents so that we can continue to #GrowDO and achieve excellence in our osteopathic profession.

A new and exciting chapter of the BEL began this past year under the leadership of Sarah Wolff, DO, with the innovative development of our BEL Collaborative Cohorts. What a spectacular platform for osteopathic medical students, postdoctoral trainees and new physicians in practice at all levels of training and development to provide feedback on issues impacting our daily lives. We saw firsthand the benefit of hearing directly from you, getting your needs into the hands of AOA leadership and watching solutions being developed in real time. I look forward to continuing this effort under my leadership this year, so if you are interested in participating, do not hesitate to reach out. We want to hear from you.

Be on the lookout for exciting opportunities to engage with the BEL at upcoming events, like OMED and DO Day on Capitol Hill, where we will be hosting official BEL Summits and providing scholarships to connect emerging leaders from all our state and specialty societies, affiliates and COMs. We hope to renew the connections we share, streamline efforts instead of working in silos and truly exhibit the vast network of osteopathic leadership opportunities available to you in the transition from medical school to residency and beyond.

One of the ways that we can effectively connect and communicate with you all is through our Looking Forward newsletter. To highlight the hard work of our BEL workgroups and leadership from this past academic year, I invite you to explore our combined Spring and Summer newsletter content included here today. The work of the BEL never ends, despite our annual transition to new leadership. Our efforts are a continuation of the wonderful work being done year after year, perpetually moving us forward.

Let’s keep moving forward together.

Sincerely,

Shawn M. Hamm, DO, MPH
