The following statement is attributable to AOA President Teresa A. Hubka, DO, FACOOG (Dist.), CS; and AOA CEO Kathleen S. Creason, MBA.

Representing nearly 200,000 osteopathic physicians (DOs) and osteopathic medical students in the U.S., the American Osteopathic Association is deeply concerned by the recent removal of all 17 members of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

The ACIP has served as the nation’s preeminent authority providing guidance for the health care community and public on control of vaccine-preventable disease for more than 60 years.

Unequivocally, the AOA supports routine and emergent immunizations as proven treatments that protect against illness and reduce the spread of disease. As a physician organization dedicated to promoting public health, we regard vaccination as a primary defense against avoidable illness and rely on the ACIP to provide transparent vaccine recommendations that are rooted in credible authority and evidence-based research.

The AOA recognizes the importance of an ACIP that continues to prioritize scientific integrity and promulgates evidence-based resources.
