Looking Forward newsletter: Fall 2023

The Bureau of Emerging Leaders is your representative body in AOA leadership and is made up of students, residents, fellows, and new physicians in practice. The BEL has formed the following workgroups to best serve our members: Advocacy, Communications, Resolutions, and OMED/DO Day Scholarships. Read on to learn more about recent initiatives your Bureau has advanced on your behalf!

If you are interested in joining one of these workgroups with the BEL this year, please email BEL@osteopathic.org to express your interest!

Advocacy

DO Day Scholarship: The scholarship was expanded to new physicians in practice. This scholarship sponsored by the AOIA will continue next year with the goal of getting more residents and NPIP engaged.

DO Day pre-meeting: We discussed topics with members about what to expect at DO Day, clarified any confusion about roles and encouraged those who have never been.

AOA Policy Round Table: A very well received recap of DO Day and follow ups on what our day accomplished.

Communications

The Communications Workgroup has been hard at work collecting information and pieces for your reading enjoyment for this newsletter. We are excited to share our work with you and hope you enjoy it!

Scholarship

Hard to believe the summer is almost winding down. It feels like just yesterday we were together at the AOA House of Delegates deliberating policy and discussing how to further advance the osteopathic profession.

Now we get to look ahead to the premier Osteopathic Medical Education event of the year, OMED23! The BEL, with the gracious support of its sponsors, have been able to provide scholarships to attend this event as well as other osteopathic events this past year such as DO Day. We are thrilled to announce that five lucky BEL OMED scholarship winners have been selected to attend OMED 2023 in beautiful Orlando, FL this coming October. The winners are: Rachel Jeter, DO, Kaitlyn Kilpatrick, DO, Shahmir Naveed, DO, Alexis Ousley, DO, and Ashwin Shankar, DO.

As always, the goal of the BEL is to represent, encourage, and inspire the next generation of osteopathic physicians and medical students from their days in medical school up to their first five years of independent practice. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about what the AOA is doing for the osteopathic profession, consider applying for one of our BEL scholarships at future AOA events such as next year’s DO Day on the Hill, or even further ahead to OMED 2024!

Resolutions

The Resolutions Workgroup had a successful year! This year the work group focused on creating a resolution to present to the AOA House of Delegates that focused on exploring the impacts virtual residency interviews have had on graduating osteopathic medical students’ residency placement. After months of hard work and deliberation, our resolution successfully passed at the 2023 AOA HOD! Congratulations to the Resolutions Workgroup for a job well done!
