Beginning in June 2024, the AOA kicked off a year-long celebration commemorating 150 years since A.T. Still, MD, DO, first introduced the concept of osteopathic medicine. Since then, the osteopathic medical profession has evolved to serve as home to more than 197,000 osteopathic physicians and medical students across the nation.
The philosophy of osteopathic medicine introduced by Dr. Still in 1874 provided the foundation for a thriving profession, currently representing 11% of all physicians and 25% of all medical students in the U.S. DOs hold some of the most prominent positions in medicine today, including serving as the physician to the current and past U.S. presidents, overseeing care for the NASA medical team and leading some of the nation’s top-rated hospitals and health systems.
We hope you’ll join us in celebrating the tremendous advancements made in osteopathic medicine over the last 150 years, as we look to a future full of promise for the next generation of DOs and osteopathic medical students.

If you grew up (or parented kids) during the 1990’s and 2000’s, you likely encountered “Flat Stanley,” an educational activity that involves mailing paper or cardboard cutouts of the titular children’s book character all over the world, documenting his travels and adventures along the way.
In similar fashion, “Flat A.T. Still” is traveling the globe to spread the word about the anniversary of osteopathic medicine, making stops to visit osteopathic medical physicians and students at profession-wide events like the AOA House of Delegates Meeting and OMED, as well as colleges of osteopathic medicine and osteopathic state and specialty societies.
