Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Describe appropriate pain assessment strategies and Oklahoma regulatory requirements that must be addressed before initiating opioid therapy, including documentation, risk discussion and Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) review.
  • Apply Oklahoma prescribing guidelines for acute and chronic pain management, including limits on initial prescriptions, use of patient-provider agreements, monitoring strategies and risk mitigation practices during ongoing opioid therapy.
  • Evaluate clinical scenarios to determine appropriate opioid prescribing decisions, including when to initiate therapy, implement monitoring safeguards, consider tapering strategies or address potential opioid use disorder.
