AOA advocates for fair and sustainable value-based payment reforms

On July 11, the AOA responded to Senators Sheldon Whitehouse and Bill Cassidy’s request for information on value-based payment reforms. The letter emphasized many key points about value-based reforms including that new payment models should be optional, tailored to various specialties, and avoid reducing overall payments.

The letter also highlighted the need to recognize the underfunded state of the physician fee schedule and the necessity for adequate, inflation-adjusted payment rates. A hybrid payment approach that supports comprehensive services without reducing payments for other specialties. The AOA also stressed the importance of sustainable, long-term payment models that keep pace with rising medical costs and require significant investment in practice transformation and quality improvement.

Additionally, the AOA expressed concerns about the Pay PCPs Act, noting it should not disadvantage other specialties or undermine the patient-physician relationship. The AOA is committed to ensuring the osteopathic voice is heard in shaping healthcare policies that promote high-quality, patient-centered care.
