Creative corner: Painting

As you move through transitions this spring, consider the positive impacts of creativity on every stage of your life. Writing poetry, composing music and crafting visual art are fun and inspiring ways to broaden your perspective.

Creativity allows one to funnel emotions into something beautiful, expressive and uplifting, and the winter is a time when we need positivity the most. Many struggle with depression, self-doubt and low self-esteem, especially when the weather is getting warmer and the skies are brightening up, so the AOA communications workgroup encourages you to find time this spring to do something that makes you feel happy and renewed.

Please consider sharing your creativity with us by submitting to Creative Corner so that we can showcase your talents in an upcoming newsletter! These pieces will be published on the BEL webpage and linked to our quarterly newsletters. Please email submissions to [email protected] by June 14.

Painting has always been both a creative outlet and a source of personal wellness for me, but over time it has evolved into something much more meaningful. As I progressed through medical school, my art grew alongside my education, becoming a tool for learning as well as expression. I began using painting to better understand complex subjects like anatomy and even organized “paint & learn” sessions, where classmates and I explored topics such as cranial nerves in a more engaging and memorable way.

What began as a hobby gradually became a way to connect with my community. I sold pieces at local coffee shops, donated artwork for fundraisers, participated in art shows and even created pieces for local healthcare offices. Through these experiences, art has become deeply intertwined with both my personal and professional development, allowing me to connect, teach and contribute in meaningful ways.

As I continue my journey in medicine, I hope to keep expanding the role of art in my life and using it to make a positive impact wherever I can.
