AOA joins physician organizations urging oversight of medical care in detention facilities

By AOA Staff

02.16.26

The AOA joined a coalition of national physician and specialty physician organizations in urging Congress to conduct robust oversight of medical care provided in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) family detention facilities. The coalition raised serious concerns about reports of delayed or denied medical care for detainees, including children and pregnant women, as well as failures to comply with ICE’s own National Detention Standards.

The letter calls on congressional leaders to ensure timely access to medical, dental and mental health services, appropriate management of infectious disease outbreaks and coordination with public health authorities to protect detainees, staff and surrounding communities.
