Request for Relief for Nonprofits and Other Tax-exempt Healthcare Organizations in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act):

Dear Speaker Pelosi, Minority Leader McCarthy, Majority Leader McConnell, and Minority Leader Schumer:

On behalf of the undersigned osteopathic specialty and state organizations, and the more than 151,000 osteopathic physicians and medical students we represent, thank you for the steps you have already taken and will continue to take in order to protect Americans during the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Osteopathic physicians (DOs) are caring for patients on the frontlines of this pandemic. Our organizations work to support these physicians and their patients, not just during this unprecedented time, but throughout the year. We are writing to request the inclusion of financial relief for nonprofits and other tax-exempt healthcare organizations adversely impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act).

Our associations provide Continuing Medical Education (CME), which ensures that physicians are providing high-quality evidence-based care at all stages of their careers, and is necessary for maintaining state medical licenses. We support medical students and physician practices, and serve as trusted resources for patients and policymakers. Unfortunately, many of our programs have been impacted by COVID-19.

While we are continuing our efforts to support physicians across our states and medical specialties, we are also navigating the impact of canceled meetings, conventions, and educational conferences.

This has led to the cancellation of numerous contracts, incurring potential financial penalties and revenue losses. All the while, we are continuing our efforts to support the healthcare community during this critical time.

As you complete your work on the CARE Act, we respectfully ask that the sections of the legislation which provide relief for small businesses include nonprofit and other tax-exempt organizations. Beyond the challenges associated with meeting cancellations and lost revenue, described above, our organizations also want to be able to provide any necessary sick leave for employees impacted by COVID-19 and also request inclusion in related provisions.

Thank you for your leadership and consideration of this request.

Sincerely,
