AOCR Imaging Patterns of Toxic-Metabolic Encephalopathies

June 24, 2026

This lecture is intended to provide a comprehensive overview of toxic metabolic encephalopathy. The learners will be provided with major imaging patterns and clinical presentations, allowing them to form thoughtful differential diagnosis. In addition, learners will be presented with emerging challenges of toxic metabolic encephalopathy pertaining to drug overdoses, such as opioids, cocaine, methanol, ethanol and amphetamines. Due to the overlap of many disease patterns, the learners will better understand how to provide thoughtful differential diagnoses based on clinical presentation.

Objectives

  • Review major imaging patterns of toxic-metabolic encephalopathy.
  • Synthesize a differential diagnosis based upon clinical findings and location of abnormalities.
  • Create more thoughtful diagnoses based upon clinical history.
