Fundamentals of Obesity Treatment

The Fundamentals of Obesity Treatment Course is a one-day course offering introductory education about the evidence-based approaches for evaluating, diagnosing and treating obesity in a clinical setting. The content is appropriate for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, clinicians-in-training and other health care professionals.

Participants will gain a general understanding of why obesity is a disease and what treatment options are available. The Fundamentals of Obesity Treatment is designed to enable health care providers to:

  • Understand why obesity is considered a disease with diverse etiologies
  • Understand the basic physiologic processes involved in obesity
  • Perform basic screenings for obesity and obesity-related diseases in a primary care setting
  • Communicate with patients about their weight and any related conditions comfortably and compassionately in a knowledgeable manner
  • Understand fundamentals of physical activity that may be used in obesity treatment
  • Understand fundamentals of various diet options that may be used in obesity treatment
  • Recognize the impact of and need for behavior modification
  • Understand the impact of the patient’s environment on treatment
  • Understand why it may be necessary to incorporate pharmacotherapy as part of an overall individualized treatment plan
  • Understand the mechanisms, benefits and side effects of current anti-obesity medications
  • Understand the importance of using a long-term approach to obesity treatment
