AOA President Ray E. Stowers, DO, contributed to an American Medical News article that was published today regarding the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners’ antitrust appeals case.  We believe the ruling by the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals could hamper state licensing boards’ ability to regulate the practice of medicine.  President Stowers stated that the decision “jeopardizes state boards’ authority to determine when nonphysician clinicians are providing a level of treatment that exceeds [their] education and training.”  He added that “what the court’s decision fails to take into account, however, is that the quality of health care rests on the skill and ability of professionals who have been trained to deal with the complexities of diagnosing and treating patients.”  The AOA had previously joined with the American Medical Association (AMA) to file an amicus brief in support of the dental board.​

The AOA and the Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of California (OPSC) wrote to the State Senate’s Health Committee on June 14 in support of AB 1208.  This bill would establish requirements that a health system must meet to be designated as a Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH). The key requirements include the delivery of coordinated, patient-focused care by a physician-led team as well as a payment structure that encourages appropriate management of complex medical cases and increases access to care.  The bill also incorporates six quality and safety components into a PCMH, such as voluntary engagement in performance measurement and improvement to achieve continuous quality improvement.  The AOA and OPSC support the PCMH model of care and believe this bill will help California’s physicians, non-physician clinicians and patients to work together to achieve optimal health care outcomes.​​

The National Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) and the AOA Council on Research (COR) have announced a call for abstracts for the Student Poster Competition at the 2013 Research Conference.  Co-sponsored by SOMA and the COR, the formal Poster Session will take place during OMED 2013—the AOA’s Osteopathic Medical Conference & Exhibition, Sept. 30-Oct. 4 in Las Vegas—on Tuesday, Oct. 2, from 1:30-5 p.m.   Participating students must be SOMA members during the 2013 Research Conference.  Abstracts will be published in The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association’s (JAOA) January 2014 abstract issue.  To learn more, read the letter from the National SOMA Research and Development Director.  Online submission opens June 14, and the deadline is Monday, Aug. 5.  The COR will award three first-place prizes of $500 and six second-place prizes of $250 each!​

Vinn, DO, is in our nation’s capital today for a series of Congressional visits in preparation for when he assumes the Presidency of the AOA in July.  These legislative meetings, held with each incoming AOA President, better acquaint elected officials with the AOA and our top legislative priorities. To this end, President-elect Vinn met with several U.S. Senators and Representatives from California, as well as with some of the physicians currently serving in Congress to discuss, among other issues, the Affordable Care Act, the Sustainable Growth Rate formula, professional liability reform, and expanding graduate medical education opportunities. The AOA wrote to the California State Senate Committee on Health on June 10 seeking an amendment to the statutory language of AB 297.  The amendment would recognize the AOA Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP) as an accrediting body for primary care clinics.  The bill, as currently written, fails to recognize the HFAP accreditation for ambulatory care, which incorporates the requirements from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Conditions for Coverage in addition to other patient safety and quality related standards.  Excluding an accrediting organization equipped to accredit an ambulatory care program in a user-friendly and cost-effective manner would provide a disservice to health care facilities within California and to the patients within them.​

Thanks to the generous support of many in the osteopathic family, donations to the Osteopathic Family Relief Fund (OFRF) have gone up by more than $5,000 since February – but your colleagues affected by Hurricane Sandy and more recent tragedies still need your help.  The AOA's OFRF assists DOs and osteopathic medical students whose homes and clinics have been damaged in natural disasters. Through donations to the fund, we have been able to provide financial assistance to some of these individuals and preserve access to osteopathic medical care in hard-hit communities.  The need is still great, however, and we are only partway there. Help us reach our goal of $100,000. Time is running out to apply or nominate a leading resident for the American Osteopathic Foundation’s (AOF) “Outstanding Resident of the Year Award.”  Residents are the future of the osteopathic medical profession.  They work long hours to complete their training and are the lifeblood of many hospitals.  In addition to becoming medical experts, residents are trained in management, health advocacy, research methodology and professionalism.  Do you know a resident who stands out amongst his or her peers?  Nominations are being accepted through June 14.  Two $5,000 Awards will be awarded.  To view the eligibility criteria or download a nomination form, visit the AOF website.​​

AOA President Ray E. Stowers, DO, is on the campus of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) today to meet with student and faculty leaders.  This morning, President Stowers met with Michael Adelman, DO, WVSOM President, Lorenzo Pence, DO, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean, and Yoshiteru Hiratsuka, who teaches at both the Japan College of Osteopathy and WVSOM.  He then gave a presentation to first- and second-year osteopathic medical students on ways the AOA is “here for them” throughout their education, training and careers.  The WVSOM has a total of 836 students, 214 of them first-year.​​
